Red Riding Hood

Picture
Little Red Riding Hood a deceptively simple story about a girl and a wolf, or that is the most common telling. But what if the story had two wolves and what if Little Red Riding Hood played a more active role in the death of both wolves? This is the reality of the story of Little Red Riding Hood as recorded by the Brothers Grimm in their collection of fairy tales. In this version Red Riding Hood is given more agency in what happens and the story recounts the deaths of two wolves not one. This combination of circumstance and agency gives me pause, because the morality of it all becomes far more grey. I do not sympathize with the wolves, as they did intend harm on Red Riding Hood, but I find it hard to justify all the actions of Red Riding Hood, as she directly causes the death of both wolves. In my work on this story I would like people to think about how they feel; about the actions of these central figures, about whether it is right to sympathize with one character over the other.
